Coriander refers to the dried, near spherical, seeds of the plant Coriandrum sativum, belonging to the family Umbelliferae. The seeds are about 3 – 5 mm long with colour varying from Bright Green to Dark Brown. The fresh leaves of the plant find culinary as well as medicinal uses and are referred  as Cilantro. Besides others, the volatile oil extract of the seeds is known to have carminative, appetizing and digestive properties. The seeds are mostly used in the ground form in various curry powders. The leaves are commonly used as dressing/topping for culinary preparations.

India is the largest producer and exporter of Coriander in the world with most of its production concentrated in the two Western states of Rajasthan and Gujarat and to a small extent in Western Madhya Pradesh.

Coriander in India

India is one of the largest producer, consumer and exporter of coriander in the world. The major coriander producing states of India are Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh. India is credited with the production of a large number of variants of the seed spice with regards to the size, colour and volatile oil content. India produces an average of 180000 MT of Coriander per annum of which around 12% – 13% is exported to various nations across the globe.
