Fenugreek is the small stony seed from the pod of a bean like plant Trigonella foenum-graecum belonging to the family Leguminosae. The seeds are hard, yellowish brown and angular, with a side length of 3 – 5 mm. Historically, Fenugreek bush was used as cattle feed in Europe but in India, its seeds have always been attributed with numerous medicinal properties. Primary among them includes its ability to lower sugar levels in the blood of diabetics. Others include its digestive properties, its usage as an emollient, etc.
Fenugreek in India
India is the largest producer and exporter of Fenugreek in the world. Over 90% of the Indian production of 36000 MT is concentrated in Rajasthan and Gujarat of which around 33% – 34% is exported. The quality of Fenugreek is adjudged by the size and colour of the seeds besides other parameters like cleanliness, moisture, etc.
